It is Valentine’s Day tomorrow and I thought I would post ‘A Recycled Heart’ to my blog. I was married on Valentine’s Day on the beautiful island of Kauai. My husband thought he would never forget our Anniversary if he picked a ‘holiday’ so to speak. Does he ever forget it? Never. Do we ever celebrate our Anniversary on this day with a date out? Never. Restaurants are too crowded. I don’t need a special day for him to remember me, he remembers me every day all throughout the year. So, Valentine’s Day, our Anniversary Day is like a recycled day that gets noticed day after day. So, I call this post ‘A Recycled Heart’ because these hearts are using a recycled material. In fact, one of my favorite materials to work with, tin/aluminum.
The heart is cut from wood. You can use old or new wood. You draw the heart, then cut it out. I use a jigsaw. After, I use a hand sander to round out the top edges. Then I sand all the edges with a piece of sandpaper. The heart is then painted or stained, whichever you prefer and if you want color.
Flip over the heart and add the picture hanger you want to hang it with.
Using tin snips, cut the tops and bottoms of tin/aluminum cans into the shapes of flowers. After you have quite a few cut, place them on the front of the heart where you want to nail them down. Using small nails, i pound them into the wood and fold the tin over the edges so they look like they are sliding off. I secure and embellish the sides of the hearts with furniture nails and in some cases, it happens to hold down a flower. I like to complete the art with a little bling. On these hearts, I used jewelry, old brooch or earrings to add to the flowers. I secure the jewelry with a glue.
Your heart is ready to give to someone you love whether it be Ravishing Red, Pretty in Pink or The Dark Heart! You really don’t need to wait until Valentine’s Day or an Anniversary Day to show how much you care. Just share the love everyday of the year.
